Remember, remember the 5th of November...
Alas, I have no pictures for this, but I wanted to explain it anyway....
Apparently (notice the 'history' training coming in; I'm always saying 'apparently' because 'apparently' nothing is true or at least the version of the story that we have isn't true, etc., etc. and so forth) a Catholic Englishman named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Protestant King James and the Protestant Parliament in 1605 (?). He got a whole lot of gun powdery stuff and put it in the cellar of Parliament. He and his co-conspirators were found out and were hung, drawn and quartered, whereupon their heads were placed on spikes on London Bridge. UGGH! Oh the English....I guess the lesson is, don't do anything traitorous in England, or else!
But, anyway, what they do now is it's almost like a Colombian New Year's celebration with lots of fire and explosions. People make stuffed dolls that represent 'Guy Fawkes' and then burn them on big bonfires and they shoot off fireworks all night long. We went to Alexandra's Palace (Ally Pally) overlooking London and watched them - twas beautiful, so it twas...
